How to Reduce Food Waste at Home

 

Food waste is becoming a serious problem. On a global scale, food products that end up rotting in landfills produce huge amounts of methane gas, significantly contributing to climate change. On a more personal scale, wasting food at home is literally like throwing money in the trash can.

Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to reduce food waste at home. Let’s take a look.

Plan Your Meals

Having a weekly food plan allows you to keep your kitchen organized and your food supplies in check. It’s also a great way to make the most of your shopping trips, ensuring you pick up the things you know you’ll use. Don’t worry; you can keep things flexible and change it up a bit, but with a good idea of what you’re eating most days, you can soon reduce food waste.

Avoid Buying in Bulk

In today’s hectic world, many of us prefer to do one big weekly or even monthly shop to save time. This generally means you’ll need to buy a lot of your food in bulk. However, incorrect storage or unforeseen circumstances can result in a lot of that food ending up in the trash can. So, if it’s possible, it’s better to head to the store more frequently and buy smaller amounts of things like fruit, veg, meat and dairy products. This way, things are less likely to expire or get forgotten about.

Explore Pickles and Preserves

If you do happen to buy too many fruits or vegetables, there’s no need to panic. Humans have been preserving foods for millennia, and there’s no reason not to in this day and age. Pickling, canning, fermenting or making chutneys and jams out of your excess fruit and veg is a superb way to prolong their lifespan and create some tasty treats. Extra meat can also be cured, smoked or dried to ensure it stays good to eat for months.

Use Your Leftovers

One of the biggest sources of food waste at home is the odds and ends thrown out. Peels, stems, tops and tails all seem to end up in the trash can. But they can still be put to good use, and they’re filled with nutrients, fiber, vitamins and more. For example, broccoli and mushrooms stems can make an excellent addition to stocks or soups, while berry tops, fruit and veg peels and wilted herbs are much more appetizing when blended into a smoothie.

Take Expiry Dates with a Pinch of Salt

Another major source of food waste at home comes from misread expiry dates on food packaging. Most products feature a sell-by date, used to aid stores and markets in stock rotation. However, many people interpret this date as the expiry and often throw such goods out without even checking that they’re still good. Even the actual expiry date should be taken with a pinch of salt. Trust your senses, and if an ‘expired’ product still looks, smells and feels okay, there’s normally no reason to throw it out.

Make the Most of Your Freezer

In terms of food preservation, the home freezer is one of the greatest achievements of the previous century. It allows you to prolong the lifespan of a whole host of foodstuffs, from raw meat to cooked meals. A freezer can be a superb way to ensure you never have to throw excess food away and is also an excellent place to keep batches of stocks, soups and even lemon and lime juice.

Use Sensible Storage

Poor storage can cause things like fruit, vegetables and meat to degrade faster. Meat and dairy should almost always be stored in the fridge, but be careful with things like onions, tomatoes, garlic and potatoes, which are better stored at room temperature. Also, keep bananas, apples and tomatoes away from other fruit and veg to ensure they don’t ripen too fast. With packaged goods, use stock rotation methods to ensure that the items with the shortest expiry date are always at the front and easiest to reach.

Think Before You Throw

Before you throw anything away, catch yourself and think if there’s a better option. If you end up with excess raw food, look to see if any local food banks or charities could make better use of it.

Set a Compost Challenge

So much of the food we throw away can be put to excellent use as compost. From vegetable peels to tea leaves, coffee grinds to eggshells; each can break down slowly to create a superb natural fertilizer. If you have a garden, a compost heap is a no-brainer. However, even if you don’t have an outdoor space, it’s worth keeping a compost container. Many municipalities run composting programs and will gladly take your leftovers from you.

Penticton launching pop-up parks for second year of “Picnic-ton”

 

POP-UP PICNIC PARKS

As warm weather is returning, so is the successful City of Penticton “Picnic-ton” program, with pop-up events coming soon.

Temporary outdoor spaces, or “parklets,” will be erected on city streets, creating a spot for residents to eat outdoors and enjoy free entertainment.

“Pop-up Picnic-ton is a Love Local initiative to promote shopping, eating, drinking and supporting local. Order your takeout meal and head down to this pop-up event to eat outdoors, play some yard games, listen to live music and enjoy the ‘street park’ atmosphere,” said Carly Lewis, economic development manager.

This year’s event will be held over the following two days and locations:

  • Saturday, June 4, 12-4 p.m.: Winnipeg St. at Estabrook Ave.
  • Saturday, June 18, 12-4 p.m.: 500-block of Main Street

All local businesses that offer takeout for and drink will be automatically enrolled in the program, which will see their location plotted on an interactive map.

Picnic-ton was created to stimulate local businesses as part of the COVID-19 Safe Restart Task Force. This year’s event also supports a Task Force recommendation to increase public space downtown with temporary road closures.

“Picnic-ton is a great opportunity to support our local businesses and reconnect with friends and family over a picnic. We hope you enjoy this ‘Love Local’ activity and thank you for supporting local,” said Penticton Mayor, John Vassilaki.

Majority of Penticton’s newest residents moved because of work: City data

A survey found 23 per cent of the city’s new arrivals are from the Lower Mainland.

Penticton has welcomed at least 198 new residents since Jan. 1, with the majority of those relocating to the city because of work-related reasons.

New data released by the city’s economic development department on Wednesday, April 13, reveals that 42 per cent of Penticton’s newcomers over the last three months moved due to either skilled or remote work opportunities.

A city-led survey had 84 people respond over Jan. 1 to April 9, representing 198 new Penticton residents. Out of those who completed the form, 23 per cent recently moved from the Lower Mainland.

“The number of skilled and remote workers moving to Penticton in recent months reflects a positive trend that is critical to our local economy,” said the city’s economic development manager, Carly Lewis.

Only five per cent of the survey’s respondents said they were unemployed, with 16 per cent specifically identifying as remote or “work from home” employees.

With the newest data, the city is hoping to better understand what exactly attracts people to Penticton.

“Penticton really is an ideal place to live, providing a work-life balance that makes it possible to spend more time with your family and friends,” said mayor John Vassilaki.

While 42 per cent of new residents are in the Peach City because of either skilled or remote work opportunities, an additional 24 per cent of people now call Penticton home because of either a plan to open a local business or their partner’s career.

“We’ve been targeting these key demographics because we know employers have a need for skilled labour, and it’s encouraging to see that working professionals are choosing to move to this community for the lifestyle advantage,” Lewis added.

Out of the 198 new residents, 13 per cent moved from Ontario while 12 per cent arrived from Alberta.

On behalf of council, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new residents, young and old, and thank you for the vibrancy that you bring to our community,” Vassilaki concluded.

Penticton water restrictions begin at the start of May

 

WATER RESTRICTIONS COMING

The City of Penticton’s water restrictions will be in place from May 1 to August 31 this year, as a method to help mitigate the potential complications of drought.

Watering days are as follows:

  • Odd numbered street addresses may irrigate on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday only.
  • Even numbered street addresses may irrigate on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday only.
  • No watering on Mondays.

Townhouses and condominiums follow their street address, not their unit address. Only properties zoned RSM (Mobile Home Park) use their respective unit number in place of street address.

Irrigation times are as follows:

  • Automatic irrigation is permitted to run between 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. only on designated days.
  • Manual irrigation is permitted to run between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. only on designated days.

Tips from Okanagan WaterWise on how to reduce your outdoor water use this spring and summer are to put water on the night shift, between dusk and dawn during the coolest part of the day to prevent evaporation, let your grass grow this summer, leaving 2-3 inches to help slow evaporation from the soil and choose plants suitable to the dry climate.

Residents are also reminded to check sprinkler heads. Sometimes sprinkler heads break, or plants grow around the sprinkler head, preventing effective water use. Check sprinkler heads and make necessary fixes to ensure they are working right.

Sold over asking: What does this mean for homebuyers?

In a hot seller’s market with low inventory and house prices rising in many regions in Canada, many homebuyers are paying over the asking price. 

For example, a Bank of Canada report in April notes that roughly two-thirds of homes in the Greater Toronto Area were selling for more than the listing price in February of this year.

Whether these buyers found the perfect home and are willing to pay the elevated price, they believe the home is undervalued, or they just want to buy now before prices rise further, homebuyers need to consider the impact this will have on them if they are financing the purchase.

How does paying over asking impact financing?

Homebuyers that pay over asking may find it difficult to secure the full amount of the financing they need. 

Lenders rely on an appraiser’s opinion of the value of the home, which is most often determined by looking at the local area’s comparable sales and other local market factors. The appraised value, and not the actual purchase price, is used, in part, to determine the size of the loan. If the value is too low, homebuyers may not be able to secure the full amount of financing they need and may need to look for alternatives to cover the deficiency. 

Why is the appraised value different than what I paid?

Lenders require an appraised value from a licensed, experienced local appraiser expert to determine the current value of the property for lending purposes.

In many neighbourhoods, if the homes are being sold over asking, the prices of the comparable homes will reflect this and the appraiser will provide a value that is more in line with the purchase price. However, if homes are not being sold over asking, the appraised value could come in lower than expected.

Where does that leave homebuyers?

Valuation company RPS Real Property Solutions recommends caution and preparation as approaches to take for anyone looking to buy a home in a competitive market.

Buying over asking makes sense for many homebuyers, especially if you want a home in a certain neighbourhood close to family or work in a competitive market. Before you buy, stay in close contact with your real estate agent and your lender or mortgage professional to explore different scenarios and your options.

2022 home price forecast increased after exceptionally strong first quarter

Royal LePage has increased its 2022 forecast following record price gains in the first quarter of 2022. The aggregate price of a home in Canada is expected to be 15% higher in the fourth quarter of this year compared to the end of 2021, following a supercharged start to the year. As we enter the spring market, buyer hopefuls continue to be challenged by tight competition, due to a chronic shortage of supply, despite a slight increase of inventory hitting the market in some regions. 

“Entering 2022, we had anticipated a strong first half, and moderating real estate markets thereafter. Call it buyer fatigue or easing demand, these periods of uncomfortably high home price appreciation do run their course. We are seeing the first signs of moderation in some regions, as more inventory is becoming available and competition eases slightly,” said Phil Soper, president and CEO of Royal LePage. “The first quarter of the year was so strong, however, that we are bumping up our 2022 outlook. And, home prices will continue to climb in the months ahead as a result of our relentless low supply-high demand imbalance.”

While some properties may be attracting fewer bids than last year, and buyer behaviour is beginning to shift – given the recent increase in interest rates and the expectation of several more to come – listings in popular neighbourhoods that are priced appropriately continue to draw multiple offers and are selling above the list price. 

Nationally, the aggregate price of a home increased 25.1% year-over-year to $856,900 in the first quarter of 2022; the highest gain on record since the Company began tracking aggregate prices. When broken out by housing type, the national median price of a single-family detached home rose 26.7% year-over-year to $906,100, while the median price of a condominium increased 19.7% year-over-year to $612,900.21.

Maximize Your ROI with These Home Renovations

Too many homeowners, reinvesting money on fixing up their house presents a slippery slope. On one hand, there’s virtually no renovation that will offer a 100% return on the investment, whether $5,000 or $50,000 is budgeted.

Then again, home improvements increase the overall value of the property while also making the house more enjoyable to live in. Most experts agree that if the money is available, building equity in your home is one of the smartest investments a person can make and there are various ways these projects can pay you back.

Improve Energy Efficiency

Upgrades that help a home become more energy efficient potentially offer a three pronged ROI – they increase property value, lower utility bills, and are eligible for government tax breaks. In addition, the house will have purer air quality and will be more comfortable without drafts or warm air leaking out. Some of the best projects for improving efficiency include:

•    Window and Door Replacement / Restoration – While window replacement is typically listed as a project with a great ROI, that’s really only true for homes built after World War II. Replacing windows in older homes actually decreases their value but in newer dwellings can save up to $400 annually. Installing a new steel entry door remains the top renovation project for 2014, offering a 96.6% return.

•    Energy Star Appliance Upgrade – The effectiveness of replacing household appliances depends on the age of the old equipment. For instance, a new refrigerator will use about half as much energy as one that’s 10 years old, while a washing machine upgrade can save about $100 per year. This might not seem like a lot but if the annual cost deductions are measured over 10-15 years the savings can be quite significant. Plus, tax credits of about 10% of the total cost can be acquired after purchase.

Other energy efficient upgrades include adding insulation to a basement or attic and installing programmable thermostats.

Curb Appeal Renovations

Improving the look of your home is also a big selling point and the following investments for prettying up the property make your home more attractive – to both you and a potential buyer.

•    Garage Door Replacement – Replacing an old, damaged, or bland garage door consistently offers one of the best ROI, around 85% on a $1,500 project.

•    Siding and Shutters – New vinyl siding will give your house a fresh new look and will recoup almost 80% of your investment. Shutters add detail and can be salvaged or reclaimed for maximum return.

•    Aluminum Fence – A classy looking aluminum fence will improve the curb appeal of the home while also offering a return of investment around 65%. The fence also adds security and aluminum is maintenance free compared to wood or wrought iron.

Other types of landscaping will get you around 50 – 75% but should be limited to usable space such as a backyard barbecue or pergola. Shrubs, mulch, and trees add value but also require upkeep.

Quality of Living Remodeling

The benefits of quality of living upgrades are hard to measure in only dollars and cents. Enjoying your whole home could be considered priceless but these projects are a good place to start:

•    Attic Bedroom – Adding functionality to ‘dead’ space greatly improves quality of living. Turning an attic into a bedroom is great for a child to have their own space or for a spot for guests to sleep. It’s a roughly $50,000 job for electricity, framing windows and walls, insulation, and finishing but buyers love extra bedrooms and the ROI is almost 85%.

•    Deck (Wood) – A deck could have both peace of mind and curb appeal value as it aesthetically adds living space to the exterior of your home. A $10,000 deck offers a return of a whopping 88%.

•    Home Office – The cost versus value report for 2014 lists a home office as only a 48% ROI. That being said, if a home office enables you to telecommute and save gas money as well as vehicle wear and tear while eradicating a long drive back and forth to work, then the return is much higher.

The one thing to remember about reinvesting in your home is that since barely anything offers a 100% ROI, it’s not always recommended to renovate just to sell. Because of this it’s important to take energy efficiency, curb appeal, and quality of living projects into account for what you’ll enjoy the most while still making money… someday.

Wineries prepare for tourists

 

Wineries in Lake Country are gearing up for a busy tourist season amidst the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

Gray Monk Estate Winery says this spring they will be featuring new experiences, seated tastings and unrestricted dining.

“We have introduced some new things. In terms of our tasting room, our capacity is back up to what it was pre-COVID. We still do have dividers between tasting groups, and then we do also have our estate room available for seated tastings and this can be booked in advance,” said estate manager Alexa Macalister.

Macalister says another new experience, on Sundays, sees the winery offer a 45-minute yoga class followed by brunch.

Gray Monk says staffing shortages have been one of the biggest concerns as they gear up for tourist season.

“We are still hiring for the season. We have had some really great applicants, but we still do have opportunities available here. We are hoping to hire I would say another ten to 12 staff here at the estate across the retail and culinary teams,” Macalister.

Across the street at Ex Nihilo Vineyards, owner Decoa Harder says pivoting their business over the last two years has helped them run smoothly.

“For sure online became more and more prevalent as a part of our business. We also have a super loyal wine club following and membership and they continue to keep us busy.”

“Historically if you went wine touring, people’s conception of wine touring is to enter a winery and do a tasting standing at a bar. So when the pandemic started we had to figure out how to do it in a safe environment so that meant sitting guests down and allowing them to space out.”

“Really our whole philosophy is about offering guests a very high-quality experience and with that we have limited them the number of guests we can accommodate hourly,” Harder said.

Ex Nihilo says it will remain important for guests to book ahead this spring and summer.
